The B-Man

I'm having one of those enjoyable weeks, getting to know some monumental music that I've never really listened to before. And this one is a doozie: Bach's Mass in B-Minor. WOW.

At this moment, I truly do not understand why anyone would ever listen to anything other than:

Et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis.

I would imagine some would view that treatment as a bit lite and lush, but is it ever beautiful.

This phase in my life will pass. But perhaps the question will not fade away so easily: what are the religious sentiments underlying this work? Is the "pax," with its imperfect cadence, a little too pat for a Catholic, just right for Luther? What is going on with all this joy?

What do you think?
