"We have more houses burning than we have people and engine companies to fight them," San Diego Fire Capt. Lisa Blake said, according to the Associated Press. "A lot of people are going to lose their homes today."
On one cul-de-sac in the San Diego suburb of Rancho Bernardo, five of six homes burned to the ground, leaving flames from gas lines flickering amid the ruins, according to a KGTV report.http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/10/22/wildfire.ca/index.html
Rancho Bernardo is where my mom and brother live. Two other brothers and my youngest brother's business are nearby. All are threatened by the fire. So are a lot of elderly people: Rancho Bernardo is basically a retirement community. Many elderly people could be trapped in their homes during the massive evacuation.
Please pray for everyone involved.
Update: Just talked with Mom on the phone. Everyone is fine and staying with friends outside of the fire area.
They hope to return home tomorrow. Please pray that the area will be relieved of the gusty hot desert winds that have swept these fires out of control.
Update: Looks like Mom's house is safe. Firefighters apparently made a massive flanking containment maneuver at Rancho Bernardo/ Espola Road, practically a block from her home. They narrowed by half the north-south breadth of the fire, which was advancing west. Mom's house was about a quarter-mile south, then, from the fire. Nice one, brave soldiers.

Kathy, I just want to thank you and everyone who prayed for the residents of San Diego & surrounding area during this past week.
Things are pretty well settled down now for those of us who only suffered a sooty, branch-strewn patio. For those who are without a home to return to, more prayers are needed. Their struggles are just beginning.
"Thank you" does not begin to express my appreciation for your prayers. You will be remembered in mine.
God bless you all,
Kathy's mom
Glad to hear it--whew!
