The date we've all been waiting for is here: December 17th. We are entering into the home stretch of Advent preparations and mark the turning point with a daily festival of poetry, the O Antiphons. Every day from now till the 23rd we have a new antiphon, sung at the Alleluia of the Mass and at the Magnificat during Vespers. Each one calls Jesus, the coming Messiah, by a different name, referring to some aspect of the salvation that God has in store for us through him. We have been patient for a long time; now is the beginning of our active longing.
O Wisdom!O Adonai!
O Root of Jesse!
O Key of David!
O Dawn of the East!
O King of the Gentiles!
O Emmanuel!
He is Wisdom and Lord and Source and King, Daystar, Ruler of the Whole Earth, God-with-us. And he comes to save.
Amen! Come, Lord Jesus.
