Tis the Season......for conferences!

A special welcome to those reaching this blog through the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship. I would have liked to have attended the Seminar on Teaching Hymnology. How delightful instead to find my lowly blog on the syllabus!

Hope it was a good week.

Speaking of good weeks, I attended some of the Church Music Association of America's 2006 Colloquium. I heard a very good talk by Fr. Robert Skeris on the development of the postconciliar instructions on sacred music. I'd run into Fr. Skeris before, when I was asked by the CUA Press to make an index for a book on Gregorian chant that he had a big role in. I had a chance to speak with him a little last week about the hymns I've been writing and he encouraged me very much by saying that, if they are good, it is obviously a work of the Holy Spirit.

We have an interesting future before us. We will have to make a lot of choices, and the reasons for these choices must be sound. What will be our guiding principles? We must not be too caught up in the latest art for art's sake. Our art is at the service of the proclamation of the Gospel, and of the holy Mysteries. Nor can we neglect to give our very best.

Please join me in praying to the Holy Spirit, that the Church will be given wisdom and right judgment to walk well in His paths in the next few years.
